
A sighting disk or bearing disk is not a compass, but a supplement to navigation, used when the compass does not allow you to take a bearing 360° around. The sighting disk functions as a sighting device. It consists of a graduated disk that is suspended from a gimbal so that it can move freely. The zero point of the disk is fixed and points forward parallel to the longitudinal axis of the ship.
On larger ships, a beacon can help the watch commander anticipate crossing situations and avoid collisions.
In traditional navigation, the sighting disc is used to determine the ship's position by taking three bearings of known objects or to check the ship's course in relation to the sun or stars.
On the dial is a rotating sighting device, called a diopter, which is used to locate objects. The direction of the target is read on the protractor in relation to the ship's longitudinal axis.
To get the actual bearing (deviating bearing), you add the ship's current course to the read angle.
Design and functionality
This sight/mirror disc is made of brass, 35 cm high, 19.7 cm wide. It is possible to purchase a wooden storage box, which costs 825 kr ex. VAT. We recommend ordering this box to store the target safely and avoid damaging it.
