Due to the magnetic influence, the compass housing on the upper deck is at a sufficient distance from interfering magnetic iron and other magnetic field sources. According to the IMO, the reading is taken at the steering position in the wheelhouse without power using the reflection tube. Lenses and mirrors mounted in this tube magnify the rose image accordingly. This technology is demanding and reaches its limits with longer transmission lengths.

Where national regulations also allow the use of electronic means of transmission, Compass Video Remote Reading can be used. A camera on the compass in the compass housing reads the heading and sends it to a screen that can be mounted anywhere on the steering column. The camera can easily be mounted in any Cassens & Plath compass housing. A modified camera reading can also be used on overhead compasses. On the screen, Compass Video can be turned on/off and the image brightness can be adjusted. In the event of a main power failure, the supply is automatically switched to the emergency power supply. The device is designed for remote reading of magnetic compass nails instead of the reflector tube and complies with IEC 60945.

CAMcourse is also available for overhead compasses. Here the camera is mounted above the compass using a mirror device.
